One a day- Art Challenge

My mom was an artist

I never really thought of myself as an artist, because my mom was the artist. She was an amazing artist. She did acrylic, chalk pastel, oil, watercolor, pencil drawing- anything to do with paper and cavas, she could create a masterpiece. She didn’t sculpt, not because she couldn’t, but because she didn’t have the space, or the time and Oil painting was her favorite medium.

She taught art, so I took the occasional art class from her. She came to our school to bring art to our classes. Drawings and paintings that I did, she would give me great advice on how to make them better, more realistic and I learned a lot from her. Art was what she breathed. Art was who she was. She continued to take art classes to help her improve. I don’t think there was a day that she didn’t draw or work on some painting she was creating. Even when she was sick and in pain, she would draw or paint till the pain meds would kick in enough for her to sleep.

Art isn’t that for me. I’ve never felt the need to immerse myself in paintings, or lost myself for days on end in a piece of work I am finishing. I do not feel like an artist.

But, I enjoy art. I really like to paint and add unexpected color. I like to look at the clouds and the tree and find shape and think of how I would add a touch of gold with a hint of red here, or maybe try to see what the park lake would look like as a Monet painting. I can draw. I can paint. I am better than many, not nearly as good as others. Never in a million years did I think I would have a business using art!

I would like to get better. So, I decided to do what I always preach to my kids and practice. My goal is to do one drawing, painting, wood carving or piece of art- every day- this year.

I am on day 14 ( January 14, 2025). I have 13 drawings/paintings. Nothing big. Not all of them are good, most are ok. I usually have 15-30 minutes in the evening where I can sit down and do some art. 14 days out of 365 days isn’t much, but it’s a start! I would love for you to join me on this journey and learn to create a little bit of art everyday! Or maybe there is something else you’ve been working on and would like to get better at ( knitting, writing, embroidery, etc. ) and you can join me in doing 15-30 minutes everyday for the rest of the year. We would love to see what you create! Follow our journey, see what we paint and draw everyday on our instagram and fb pages ( @chrisncarries) and tag us #chrisncarries #oneaday2025

Who knows, maybe by the end of the year I will finally feel like a true artist!
